BillFloat Pays Your Bills When You Can't

If money's tight and you need a little extra time to cover a bill, service BillFloat can take care of it for you and you can pay them back later.

After entering the company you need to pay, you give BillFloat the amount of the bill and your account number. It'll let you know how many days it'll float the bill (a maximum of 30) and how much you'll owe BillFloat—which is generally $5, but decreases with the number of bills you pay. BillFloat will collect a little more information about you, like how you're going to pay them back, and then you'll be all set. Just make sure you'll have the money in a month, since BillFloat won't float its own bills.

Online Money Making Opportunities

Alternate universes and super powers may be limited to comic books, but costumed crusaders are everywhere in the real world. If they aren’t fighting crime, they’re doing good deeds, raising awareness, helping the downtrodden, setting an example, steering kids in the right direction, and generally making the world a better place, each in their own strange way. Here are a few that are based in the southern part of the United States.

Master Legend

Orlando, Florida

Master Legend goes on missions to find and help the homeless of Orlando. He began his superhero career in Winter Park, Florida. He works together with other Florida superheroes in both his missions and his music, as several heroes has formed a band called the Justice Force. The article The Legend of Master Legend was printed in Rolling Stone in 2008 and is reposted online at Real Life Superheroes. See a video featuring Master Legend at vimeo.

Danger Woman

Atlanta, Georgia

Danger Woman calls herself a “karaoke crimefighter”. She’s also a disability rights activist. Danger Woman is autistic and use her trusty microphone to give evil a headache with her singing. Her life and crusade against disaba-phobia (the fear of disabled people) is the subject of a documentary called Disabled But Able to Rock! Watch the trailer at YouTube (warning: singing). You can keep up with Danger Woman’s activities through her MySpace blog.

Superhero

Clearwater, Florida

Superhero may have a generic name, but he’s well known in Clearwater. A former professional wrestler, he roams the streets in his 1975 Corvette and helps stranded motorists. He also makes appearances to teach road safety and to raise money for various charities with a particular emphasis on helping the homeless.

Hardwire

Greensboro, North Carolina

There’s not a lot of information on Hardwire, except that he used to go by the name Point Guardian and he’s retired from the superhero scene. Hardwire appeared as himself in the 2008 movie Your Friendly Neighborhood Hero.

Daddy Man

Zachary, Louisiana

Daddy Man is a role model. His alternate identity is Ivy Butler of Zachary, Lousiana. He created the superhero persona first as an inspiration to his seven children, and became a hero to other children, then a role model for other fathers. You can keep up with Daddy Man’s activities on his blog. Butler is the subject of the book The Chronicles of Daddy Man. Hear what Daddy Man has to say at YouTube.

Enigma

San Antonio, Texas

Enigma patrols San Antonio looking for any opportunity to do good. He posts his exploits at MySpace, where you can read about an incident earlier this year where he stopped a pair of car thieves. Enigma also lends his powers to environmental causes.

The Viper

Columbia, Tennessee

The Viper is a 20-year-old college student who dresses in green and patrols the streets of Columbia, Tennessee. The local police aren’t impressed, and in fact warned him against wearing a mask in public. The Viper says, “I am just a guy trying to do what’s right in tights.” Columbia citizens think it’s kind of neat to have a superhero in their small town.

Amazonia

Ocala, Florida

Amazonia has been working as a superhero since 2002, beginning in Lowell, Massachusetts and worked in both New York City and Ocala, Florida. She is now based in an “undisclosed location”. Amazonia patrols the streets looking for opportunities to help people and takes part in activities such as blood drives, helping the homeless, and environmental activism. Read more on her blog.

DC Guardian

Washington, DC

DC Guardian is part of the Capital City Super Squad, a group of nine superheroes who patrol Washington. An Air Force veteran, he hands out copies of the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights to remind everyone of what it means to be an American.

KnightVigil

Tampa, Florida

KnightVigil also goes by the name Darian VanLansing, although that’s not his true identity. He is a Christian superhero who works to provide needed food and clothing to the children of migrant workers in Florida.

The Crimson Fist

Atlanta, Georgia

The Crimson Fist turned to his superhero practice after years of drugs and alcohol. By day he’s an IT programmer; by night he spends his time helping the homeless of Atlanta. He patrols the streets and hands out supplies such as bottled water and socks to those in need, using his own funds. He wishes he could do more:

“I think for the most part, it makes me feel good to do it, as selfish as it sounds. The biggest motivation is just helping people, it’s enjoyable to me,” he says. “And if it means a little sacrifice, I’m OK with that. Because if I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t feel whole.”

U.S. Group Plans a Digital Library to Aid North African Research

August 29, 2010 21:04

From the Article:

To expand North Africa's research capabilities, a project financed by the United States plans to connect the region's universities and science institutes to a "digital library" that could eventually stretch from Morocco to Libya.

The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation, a nonprofit created by the U.S. government to promote international science programs, is leading the effort and is initially working with Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia to increase their access to the latest international research, give scientists greater opportunities to collaborate, and hopefully bolster their scientific work and scholarly publishing.

The foundation, which recently completed a similar virtual library in Iraq, is spending $1.5-million on the effort. The money is part of a $5-million grant awarded to the nonprofit by the U.S. Department of State to support scientific cooperation in the Middle East and North Africa.

"The U.S. government has a renewed interest in science cooperation generally in order to solve a number of problems: environmental, economic, security," says Eric Novotny, the foundation's senior vice president. "And there's a push toward engaging the Muslim world."

One goal is to consolidate universities' existing access to online journals, negotiating one subscription with each publisher. In addition, journal articles would be available in a single, unified index, making searches easier. Another goal is to increase the visibility of North African research. The plan is to establish an open-source system for Web publishing, which will make locally produced research available online, and to help local institutions set up peer-reviewed publications where none exist.

Mr. Dunlap says the digital library's interface will be in Arabic, English, and French. It will include software that facilitates online discussions, allowing researchers to view and comment on each other's unpublished articles and automatically alerting them if others are working on similar topics.

Money Making Schemes

In a cloud world, source code is almost irrelevant. Tim O’Reilly was among the first to point this out in 2008  when he said, “Architecture trumps licensing any time,” but the meme has gone mainstream in the past year. It’s also increasingly germane to mobile business models. Those still fixated on open source qua licensing are missing the point that originally inspired its creation, not to mention big revenue opportunities.

There’s a lot of money to be made with open source, but first we need to stop fetishing antiquated notions of open source. Open-source licensing never deserved the single-minded devotion so many of us paid to it. It’s a starting point — a means — but not the end goal.

As Java founder James Gosling noted recently, freedom doesn’t start or end with source code (or its license):

Sun got a lot of heat for not going full open source early on (and there’s a lot of disagreement over what “full open source” would mean… GPL? Apache?). But freedom is a funny concept. It’s often a function of point of view: freedom for one could restrict the freedom of another.

The freedom we were most concerned about was the freedom of software developers to run their applications on whatever OS or hardware they wanted. In opposition to that, the platform providers wanted the freedom to make their platforms as sticky as possible….

When Google came to us with their thoughts on cellphones, one of their core principles was making the platform free to handset providers. They had very weak notions of interoperability, which, given our history, we strongly objected to. Android has pretty much played out the way that we feared: there is enough fragmentation among Android handsets to significantly restrict the freedom of software developers.

Android is, of course, open source. However, as Gosling argues, it doesn’t matter: hardware fragmentation can significantly undermine developer freedom that no open-source license can resolve.

Actually, it gets worse. As Jason Hiner writes, Android’s permissive openness is actually helping carriers perpetuate closed models:

e now have a situation where the U.S. telecoms are reconsolidating their power and putting customers at a disadvantage. And, their empowering factor is Android. The carriers and handset makers can do anything they want with it. Unfortunately, that now includes loading lots of their own crapware onto these Android devices, using marketing schemes that confuse buyers…, and nickle-and-diming customers with added fees to run certain apps such as tethering, GPS navigation, and mobile video….

he consequence of not putting any walls around your product is that both the good guys and the bad guys can do anything they want with it. And for Android, that means that it’s being manipulated, modified, and maimed by companies that care more about preserving their old business models than empowering people with the next great wave of computing devices.

Open-source licensing is no help in the Android example. It’s the enabling force driving the problem. Sure, it may not look like a problem today: More Android equals more profitable mobile search traffic for Google.

However, the more control carriers, not Google, have over Android, the less Google can control its destiny. So what to do to fix the problem?

First, we need widespread recognition that there is a problem. It needs to start with the Open Source Initiative, which has recently acknowledged the need to evolve our understanding of open source in order to preserve its relevance.

That understanding needs to include open data, open APIs, open source, Gosling’s interoperability principles mentioned above, and more.

As developers embrace a more holistic conceptualization of open source, they’ll discover it has real power to drive revenue, both out of competitors’ business models and onto one’s own balance sheet. Venture capitalist Brad Feld offers one clue as to how to accomplish this in a data-as-a-service world:

t seems painfully obvious to me…that the best way to popularize “data as a service” is to start with an API (which creates the revenue model dynamic) and build a bunch of open source examples on top of it. Your goal should be to make it as simple as possible for a developer to immediately start using your API in ways relevant to them. By open sourcing the starting point, you both save an enormous amount of time and give the developers a much more interactive way to learn rather than forcing them to start from scratch and figure out how the API works.

Open source is more relevant than ever, but it means so much more than a simple OSI-approved license. Or it should. The savvy developers and companies will be those with a more complete game plan, one that may include open-source licensed software, but also includes federated services, open data, etc.

Will this work for you? That depends, but one thing I can guarantee: a simplistic “open source is a matter of licensing” strategy leads nowhere.

foreclosure sales

mclaren

Everyone seems to have neglected the essential dilemma here. Contrary to the article, this isn’t about screwing current homeowners as opposed to future homeowners.

This whole mess results from a much bigger Catch-22.

It’s simple. If cramdowns had occurred, the four big mega-banks that hold most of the toxic paper on houses in America would’ve been wiped out because they’d suddenly have to rewrite the value on those mortgages to their true value, which is far far far below what the mega-banks have on their books.

But if cramdowns or a convulsive housing crash don’t take place, the owners get foreclosed and the homes wind up vacant and eventually trashed by vandals, the homeless, used by druggies as shooting galleries, etc. That wrecks entire neighborhoods and destroys cities’ tax base, wiping out whole states.

The U.S. economy is getting hammered from multiple Catch-22s like this. Obama and company haven’t made good choices because there are no good choices.

Consider: the desperate and ongoing effort to prop up housing values has nothing to do with supporting homeowners and everything to do with keeping America’s financial system from disintegrating. If the actual value of the toxic mortgages gets revealed by cramdowns or a housing crash or some other huge convulsive revaluation of houses down to their true value (probably 50% to 70% down from current values, since the retrenchment always overshoots on the low side just as the bubble always overshoots going up), the currently dicey balance sheets of all America’s big banks get destroyed. There will be nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. America’s big banks will get wiped out.

You want to revisit late 2007? Banks refusing to do overnight lending? The entire U.S. financial system seizing up? Depositors unable to get their money out? Every ATM in America shuts down, all the banks shutter their windows and close up? That’s what happens if houses sink to their true value suddenly. The shockwave will wreck the financial system, which stays afloat right now only because of the “extend and pretend” charade by America’s big banks that their balance sheets are okay and those toxic assets will someday come back up in value and the mortgages that aren’t being paid are just in arrears and not in default and those houses standing empty that haven’t been foreclosed are being renovated instead of left to rot because as long the banks don’t foreclose, they don’t have to write off those loans as bad and can still carry the loans on their balance sheets as performing assets.

There are no good choices. If the housing market crashes, the U.S. financial system seizes up and most of our big banks implode. There’s no fig leaf then, no way of pretending America’s big banks are solvent. Right now we can pretend. But not if there’s a house sudden implosion in housing prices or a mass wave of cramdowns.

But if the housing market doesn’t crash and the big banks are able to limp along with “extend and pretend” and gradually make nickels and dimes to pay down all that toxic debt by gouging bank depositors with outrageous overdraft fees and 35% credit card interest rates, then we turn into Japan and get a lost decade. Ten years or more of 10% unemployment. A collapse in the federal and state and local city tax bases as far as the eye can see. Entire states going into default. CIties selling off muni water systems, parking meters, airports in desperation.

Neither choice is a good one. Which do you choose? There is no good choice. People who blame Obama for not making the right choice on he housing collapse don’t seem to realize there is no right choice. You’re fvcked either way.

Same deal with offshoring. Another Catch-22. If congress & the president get their act together and ban offshoring and erect trade barriers and tariffs to keep jobs in America, our standard of living declines and our exports plummet and America becomes non-competitive internationally in most areas, except drug and sex tourism and our Ivy league universities. This will result in drastic declines in America’s standard of living. No more nice flatscreen TVs or iPods for you, America won’t be able to afford ‘em anymore. No more well-built Japanese cars, you’ll have to buy a Detroit POS that breaks down every 3 months. The median American wage is collapse and what’s worse, foreign companies will swoop in and buy up most of America’s big corporations because they’ve be vulernable to foreign takeover when their balance sheets decay because America as a whole has become much less wealthy.

But if we don’t ban offshoring and don’t erect trade barriers and don’t use tariffs to keep jobs in America, all our high-wage high-skill jobs as well as all our manufacturing jobs get exported overseas and America becomes a nation of dog groomers and xerox clerks. You can’t continue as a first-world country in that case.

So which do you choose? There are no good choices here.

Another Catch-22: if we slash U.S. military spending back to reasonable levels, we hemorrhage jobs because that’s where a huge number of the remaining high-paying jobs in America are. But if we don’t slash U.S. military spending, the country becomes an increasingly militarized garrison state and goes broke in the process.

Another Catch-22: if we reform America’s broken health care system lots of Americans will get decent health care who couldn’t before, but the last profit center of high-paying jobs that can’t be outsourced now gets wiped out. But if we don’t reform America’s broken health care system, we go broke and millions upon millions of people die real slow screaming like animals.

So what’s your choice? Which do you choose? To get boiled alive, or drink hydrofluoric acid? There are no good choices here. Everywhere we look, we’re staring at a myriad of Catch-22s.

From The Daily Capitalist

Existing Home Sales

Today's report that existing housing sales plummeted 27% in July should not come as a surprise.

Consider the fact that we are coming off of the greatest boom-bust credit cycle in world history. The focus of that cycle was residential housing which resulted in massive overbuilding of homes. Now we are seeing the inevitable result of the housing boom — the housing bust which requires the liquidation of this malinvestment.

From 2001 to 2006 housing starts jumped 40%, from about 1.6 million units per year to 2.250 million units per year. That period coincided with a massive expansion of the money supply by the Fed. When the cheap money stopped, the ride ended, and projects that, but for the cheap money were unprofitable, went broke.

The liquidation phase is never pretty but it is necessary for recovery. And that is why the government has been unable to prop up the housing market, except temporarily though tax credits. You can't push a string as they say, and the inevitable process of liquidation is continuing after the tax credits expired in April.

According to the National Association of Realtors report, demand for existing single-family housing dropped to a 15 year low. The 27% drop was the biggest one-month drop since 1968. Sales dropped 29.5% in the Northeast, 22.6% in the South, 25% in the West, and 35% in the Midwest. June sales figures were revised downward to 5.26 million homes from 5.37 million previously reported.

Courtesy The Wall Street Journal

The important existing inventory index increased to 12.5 months from 8.9 months. Which means it will take a year to sell off existing inventory, a substantial jump and a significant problem for the market. Normal inventory is a 4 to 6 months supply. While prices had appeared to have stabilized (median home prices rose 0.7% to $182,600 in July) because of the tax credits and speculator competition for foreclosure sales, this inventory glut will put negative pressure on prices. Ultimately I believe foreclosure speculators will create a floor under prices (based on the level of activity I have seen), so I don't think the downside will be drastic.

Jobs Reports

Last week's report on initial claims showed a MoM jump of 25,000 claimants, a 6% increase over the previous week. The 500,000 claims was a 9-month high. Initial claims had dropped to 439,000 in February, 2010, then flattened out showing a stalled recovery, and has been climbing since July.

A brighter statistic was that continuing claims were down 13,000 for the week of August 7. The four-week average is 4.527 million, the lowest since the peak in March, 2009.
